Visionary cities are promoting a new paradigm in Information and Communication Technology to transform their systems, operations, and service delivery into a truly integrated, smart approach. In this context, the Smart Metropolis Project, conducted in the Metropole Digital Institute (IMD) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), in Natal-RN, Brazil, seeks for playing an important role in the deployment of human and smart cities, bringing together researchers and practitioners with both theoretical and practical expertise in fields such as Computer Science, Engineering, and Social Sciences. As a concrete result, the Project envisions conceiving and developing methods, techniques, and tools to support the development and deployment of applications of integrated services to be offered by smart cities.

The main specific goals of SmartMetropolis are:

  • to develop applications and/or prototypes to support citizens, entities related to public services and other possible stakeholders in strategical fields, such as public safety, tourism, public and private transportation, education, smart buildings, pollution, essential services (water, energy, gas), etc.;
  • to deploy a platform to support and integrate smart city applications by adopting paradigms such as Big Data, cloud computing, mobile computing, ubiquitous computing, and Internet of Things;
  • to allow for the creation of new businesses and start-ups from the ecosystem that will be created by the Project;
  • to train and develop human resources in the context of smart cities; and
  • to disseminate knowledge, experiences, and results as scientific publications in qualified journals and conferences.

To ease the management and evolution of its activities, the Smart Metropolis Project is composed of five thematic work packages (WPs), each one having a coordinator that leads the activities developed by a group of professors and undergraduate, Master, and PhD students. Moreover, the Project has essential partners such as the Natal City Hall and the Secretariat of Public Safety and Social Defense (SESED) of the government of the State of Rio Grande do Norte.
